Mix Musts: Fall Favorites

IMG_6788

I just love everything about what is happening in fashion right now– the pops of fresh white, the unexpected textures and overall boyish/ streetwear vibes– it feels very much “me”. In terms of outfit planning, some looks, involving pieces similar to (or the exact ones) below, include:

1) Mini skirts in all sorts of colors, textures and patterns– red, floral, leather, ruffles, and plaid. I’ll pair them with vintage graphic tees now, and with sweaters/ sweatshirts come cooler temps.

2) White booties/ white shoes– guys if you don’t own a pair yet, what the heck are you waiting for?! I will say that I called this trend more than a year ago (!!) and I’m super happy that it’s still going strong… believe me, white shoes GO WITH EVERYTHING and will punctuate your looks in the freshest way possible.

3) Mules, slides and loafers with jeans, dresses and skirts– keeping things boyish and casual

4) (faux) Furry or textured outerwear… come cold weather, I’ll be keeping things interesting on the outside as well– if you’re normally a “black or grey coat only” person, make this the season that you step outside your comfort zone in a standout jacket or coat!

5) RED– The current IT color is everywhere and for good reason– it feels fresh, just slightly 80s (in a good way) and pairs super well with all the white accessories we’re seeing, as well as with the menswear plaid and polka dot trends.

6) Sweaters with interesting details– a ruffle, a zipper, a cool graphic or text– choose sweaters with personality and pair them with minis, OTK boots and leather pants, or straight leg (or skinny) jeans and an unexpected bootie.

NYFW September 2017

September NYFW is always a whirlwind– exciting because it’s the first real sign of fall and fall fashion (even though designers are showing spring collections), but also chaotic because it ALWAYS coincides with the start of school.  Being a full time teacher, I try not to take off any days the first week of school for fashion week (unless, like last year, there are events or shows that I’m REALLY excited about during the weekdays)– this year, it worked out in that I chose shows I really was excited about on the weekend right in the middle off fashion week.  Two days felt like enough this time of year– I don’t know how some people do the whole week straight through, AND go to London, Paris, and/or Milan fashion week as well!

I planned my looks in advance, as I usually do– like the weeks leading up to Christmas, it’s part of the fun- shopping for and putting together schedules and looks would be the equivalent of Christmas shopping and decorating.  This year, dark florals, bold red, start white and patterned pants were huge, and these trends anchored my looks.

Checked blazer: Missguided | Red faux leather skirt: Asos (old, similar here and here) | Black suede OTK boots: Marc Fisher | Vintage Nirvana tee: Starstruck Vintage NYC | Sunnies: Givenchy

I wore this look to the Runa Ray show at the Dream Downtown (lots of light colored, flowy fabrics, exaggerated sleeves with an ethereal feel).  I’ve worn this red faux leather skirt about 85747 times; its just so useful, bold, yet neutral feeling– it’s def one of my favorite closet staples.  I paired it with a vintage Nirvana tee and topped it with a checked menswear inspired blazer and OTK boots to give it some edge — this look totally makes me feel most like myself!

Look 2: Yuna Yang at the Garden at the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum, Upper East Side

Dark Floral Dress: Banjara via Bloomingdales | Fishnet booties: Zara | Mirrored sunnies: Quay

My second show of the day was one of my favorites– Yuna Yang, presenting at the Mount Vernon Hotel Museum– the show was held in the back garden, and the presentation followed, using random rooms throughout the hotel.  It was really different, visually stunning and unique– the show was incredible and the collection stunning.  Almost all of the looks hit that girly-tomboy nail on the head that I love so much (see fave looks below!).  I wore this dark floral long sleeved, semi-sheer dress to sort of “go” with the vibe of the show, and paired it with edgy, sharp fishnet booties for contrast.

Red star print dress: Asos | White booties ( MUST HAVE THIS SEASON!) : zara, (old, similar here, here, and here!) | Sunnies: Saint Laurent

I wore this red star print dress white pops of white to the Dan Liu SS18 show at SkyLight Clarkson Square.  This dress will def be on repeat this fall, and I can imagine also carrying it into next spring– red is THE COLOR this season, and I happen to love it paired with stark white.  Also…NOLAN made a guest appearance at fashion week this year!  Tim and Nolan met me for brunch (and a quick photoshoot) at the Standard between shows…I love being able to include Nolan in our adventures- I always figure that the more he’s exposed to, the better, right?

Liu showed lots of spring dress options in all sorts of happy, feminine textures- and with lots of peacock-feather accents, the theme of the show:

Look 4: For Leanne Marshall SS18 show at Skylight Clarkson Square:

Floral and Stripe Printed Pants: Zara | Bruce Springsteen tee: Topshop (similar here) | Suede mule heels: Gucci (in black here, a few left in gold here)

For my last show, and probably the one that I was looking forward to the most– Leanne Marshall, who always does the MOST GORGEOUS, fashion-forward yet wearable dresses ever– I wore this look, based around these fancy striped floral pants from Zara.  When I picked them up weeks ago, I knew that I’d build a fashion week look around them.  The vintage looking Springsteen tee was the perfect tomboyish contrast, and my golden suede Gucci mule heels added the perfect touch of color and interest.  I really want to try and add more interesting pants to my wardrobe this season, and these area pretty solid start! See the Leanne Marshall finale below:

And that was a wrap on fashion week for me — until February (which usually coincides with our winter break from school, so it’s a little easier to attend shows etc!)

Hope you guys enjoyed following along, got a few tips on next Spring, and some wearable (and shoppable) options from my looks above!

Look: End of Summer Feels

IMG_5577

IMG_5576

White printed off the shoulder dress: Tularosa Label | Ankle wrap sandals

I’m sure you guys have heard the saying or seen the meme already, but I totally agree with the idea that “August is the Sunday of summer”– BECAUSE ITS SO TRUE!  A good friend of mine ALSO always says “don’t let Monday ruin your Sunday”– which is also true, and I try to live by (hence the whole idea of “sunday funday”, right?).  Anyway, being a teacher full time means that those back to school blues are in full force this time of year– and yes, while it’s def sad to see all my free time (and effort in blogging!) slowly creep away from me– this feeling is also coupled with the same anticipation of going back to school with a fresh start– especially style wise– really, who doesn’t get excited for fall fashion!? One of my favorite “back to school memories” is when my bestie Joanne and I decided to wear matching maroon ribbed turtleneck sweaters from CONTEMPO CASUAL, flared Mudd Jeans, and black LUGS (these very tough looking rubber soled laceup boots) to the first day of 5th grade (slaying, as per usual!)– the problem being that the very first day of school happens to still be 90 degrees in New York, usually, in public schools with no air conditioning…

Fast forward 20 something years later, and we still confront the same issue– we’re kind of over the summer trends, those thick, glossy September issues are coming out, and NYFW is on the horizon (already planning fall-ish, but 80 degree-friendly looks! Not easy…)– and we can’t wait to bust out the autumnal vibes.  But the thermometer doesn’t cooperate. Sigh.  So we continue to bust out the summer dresses (like this one above, which happens to be on sale!)– and try and make them work for just a few more weeks…we’ll be complaining about bundling up before we know it, right?  Anyway, enjoy the last few weeks of summer guys– think of them as one big “Sunday Funday”!

Vegas Style, My Way

Hey guys! So if you’ve been following along on Instagram, you know we went to Las Vegas for the first time this past week– Tim was fighting in the Jiu Jitsu World Championship there, and we’d never been, so we figured it would be a good reason to go!  You guys know that we’re big proponents of  bringing Nolan EVERYWHERE, but this time we actually opted to leave him at home with Grandma– Vegas pool parties and the night life scene weren’t super baby-friendly– but also, let’s be honest, we wanted a little adult time for ourselves!

Other than leaving Nolan, my other source of apprehension (slight) was what to wear in Vegas– there’s a reason I reached 34 and never have been– I always judged it from afar as “cheezy” (purposely with a “z”), over the top, gaudy, and too glitzy for my taste– we’re more “chill Montauk beer drinkers” than “fancy fruity cocktail in the club” people for the most part…I’ve never owned, not would ever wear a Herve Leger type dress or anything that in my mind, people in Vegas wore.  So to sum up, I def had trouble packing!  When we got there though, I saw that people pretty much wore whatever– there def were a solid amount of overly tan, overly sparkly, overly EVERYTHING types, but lot’s of normal people as well …and my apprehension over what to wear melted away (with the over 100 degree heat).  I wore what I like, and stayed true to my style, as I always do.

For the first look above, to dinner one night I wore this black and white polka dot button down top tucked into black cutoff shorts, with my new marigold suede mules, white sunnies to give the look a retro Vegas vibe, and my red Chanel to add some more color interest.  I used the same accessories to ground my second look (on vacay I try and remix as much as I can!)– a Springsteen vintage looking band tee with a classic denim mini.  For the Wet Republic Pool Party (so glad I went– alot of fun, albeit not my usual scene lol…AMAZING people watchng!), I wore an off the shoulder “baroque” printed one piece swimsuit, which doubles as a bodysuit with denim shorts…accessoriezed with my fave black and white gingham sandals for a little print mixing action.

Overall, I’m happy we went– we stayed at the SLS Las Vegas, WHICH WAS AMAZING !!! It def had a more Miami vibe than a cheezy Vegas one– smaller, not on “The Strip” and a little more sophisticated if you ask me.  Their pool was incredible, decor on point, and food (Katsuya sushi, Cleo for Mediterranean, Umami Burger, Perq coffee…) choices were perfect.  On the morning that we left, the counter person at the in house coffee place asked me what New York was like compared to Vegas– and I replied, “It’s a REAL city”.(lol)…because that’s the thing about LV– it just feels so artificial, so man-made, so purposeful– which, like, I get it– that’s the point– I guess I just prefer the subtlety of New York, how it feels old, and comfortable and classic and just REAL!

What do you guys think about Vegas? What do you like or dislike about it? Let me know!

xo, ❤
