Trending for Fall: Polka Dot Pieces

It’s funny how you swear that certain trends, colors, patterns, or styles are just so not YOU (polka dots, purple, kitten heels are a few of my personal no-nos), and then BAM, all of a sudden you find yourself wearing one of the above two days in a row?! For me, this was the case with polka dots– I always found them way too cutesy, retro (not in a good way), and for lack of a better term, downright CORNY! I mean, come on, don’t you guys normally associate the peppy pattern with old ladies’ church dresses and white tights on two year olds?! But when Saint Laurent does polka dots for their F/W 2017 collection, suddenly, the previously cheesy, childish pattern seems rockstar and …actually really, really cool. Now, I’m not a slave to trends, by any means– and I don’t ever advise to blindly participate in a trend just because “everyone is wearing it” — but I’m also not one to advise closing yourself off to anything in life permanently (except for mayonnaise– mayonnaise will NEVER be ok.) So, for fall, I’ll be wearing polka dots– as will many fashion girls– alongside churchgoing grandmas and the preschool set. Some tips on how to avoid looking like the latter two categories:

1. I prefer my dots small– oversized polka dots read a little too young for me
2. Keep the color palette sophisticated– black and white, navy and white, red, grey, mustard, neutrals…you get the idea– pink polka dots are just no.
3. Temper the pattern with something edgy, boyish or sharp– a pointed toe loafer, a slick bootie, white accessories, a leather jacket… avoid anything too feminine or saccharine looking.
4. Go for unexpected silhouettes– a jumpsuit, romper, low cut or off the shoulder piece brings contrast to the traditional pattern.

Mustard Yellow Floral OTS dress with slit: Urban Outfitters | Blush suede lace up sandals: ASOS | Tassel earrings: J. Crew

So we spent the week out in one of my fave places on the planet, Montauk (for those of you who aren’t New Yorkers, this is the very last town at the very tip of Long Island, at the very end of the Hamptons).  We stayed at Sole East Resort, which we’ve been going to for years– its super chic and cool but also really family and baby friendly– there were lots of other families with babies and kids, but not, well, the rowdy/annoying kind…

We pretty much went back and forth between the beach and the pool, both of which Nolan loves– spend time chasing seagulls (Nolan’s fave beach activity) while Tim got some surfing in at Ditch Plains…we went into town every morning for breakfast at Bliss Kitchen (best breakfast burritos, hands down) and Happy Bowls for a dose of acai.  For dinners, we ate at Harvest on Fort Pond, a family tradition, Ruschmeyers (awesome gourmet pizza and one of the best kale salads we’ve ever had!), and Swallow East– which was seriously one of the BEST dining experiences ever– the service, the food (fried asparagus, shrimp and grits, chicken empanadas, sea bass skewers!) and the corn hole on the back deck was def Nolan’s fave part!

For Montauk, I usually like to dress somewhat casual, kind of beachy chic…its a pretty laid back vibe, where like, heels or anything super revealing or flashy would be out of place.  This off the shoulder smocked midi dress in one of my fave summer shades, mustard, was just the perfect summer dress for dinner.  I wore it with blush suede flat lace up sandals to keep it casual– I’m also of the camp that longer dresses usually call for flats…if it has a bohemian feel to it, just say no to heels!

Now that we’re back home, its time to unpack, and get organized again before our last trip of the summer: VEGAS in August!  If you guys have any recs for this Vegas newbie, feel free to comment below!

Look: Patchwork Romper

Patchwork Romper: Urban Outfitters (similar patchwork pieces here and here) | Loafers: Gucci |Sunnies: Givenchy

Just a quick post on this patchwork romper…this was actually a completely impromptu outfit change…I had taken Nolan in to visit Tim at work, and was wearing (surprise! Overalls!) It had gotten a lot hotter in the city than I had anticipated, so while walking Nolan, I popped into an Urban Outfitters and just stumbled upon this romper– the patchwork pattern had just the right casual, cool and vintagey vibe I love.  I like that it’s an unusual print– not floral, or striped or any of the other typical patterns that are out there.  Plus, you can wear the sleeves up on your shoulders or down off the shoulders…points for versatility!

Hope you guys have some awesome plans for summer! Keep cool!
