NYFW Adventures 2016

To sum up this past weekend’s New York Fashion Week adventures, I’ll need to use a few “F” words– Fashion,  (duh), Freezing (coldest temps NYC has seen in about 20 years!), Faux Fur (the point at which the first two “F” words meet), and Food (lots of recs coming your way!).

Look 1: All black texture mix and shearling for the Rebecca Minkoff show and after party, and ShopStyle Social House Event:

Faux Shearling Coat: Zara (Sold out, similar here and here)|Black lace trimmed long sleeved dress: (non maternity! BCBG Max Azria| Combat boots: Zara (sold out, similar here and here)|Suede and leather grey bag: Chloe Faye| Gold choker: Vintage, via Brooklyn Flea Market| Sunnies: Saint Laurent

I wore this look to watch the Rebecca Minkoff show and attend the after party at her Soho Store, where I GOT TO MEET HER! Needless to say this was awesome and she was as sweet and down to earth as I could have hoped for! She patted my bump and asked how my pregnancy was going– she even remembered a time we ran into each other at Barneys!

I love the unexpected mix of pairing retro looking shearling, one of my fave textures, with the sleekness of all black– and the contrast of the lace trimmed dress and combat boots make this look even more interesting for me.  Plus, the layers kept me pretty warm.  The patchwork suede and leather clutch pictured above was one of my fave pieces that Rebecca debuted at the show– It’s def topping my wishlist right now!

After RM, we hit the ShopStyle Social House event, where bloggers, fashion media, buyers, and designers mixed and mingled over a beauty bar, styling center, drinks and snacks. My fave leather accessories company, Gigi New York even gifted monogram leather crossbody bags to us attendees (obsessed with these!).

Look 2: Faux Fur, Stripes, Rust, and the Magical Overalls for the STyle Fashion Week Just Drew show and Valentine’s Day adventures

Faux Fur: Zara (sold out, similar here and here)|Black overalls: H&M  an actual maternity version here)|Striped turtleneck: J. Crew|Rust Suede booties: Aldo |Mixed Print crossbody: Loeffler Randall (old, similar here and here)

Again, on Sunday, temps in the city were negative -5085075048, so I built this look around the navy blue faux fur jacket and these black H&M overalls that magically, somehow, still fit (non maternity! My regular size! Thank god for 2% lycra, right!?) A word about mixing navy and black– ignore your grandma’s old rule about keeping these “frenemy” colors separate: They can be paired in a very chic way, as long as it looks PURPOSEFUL and not accidental like you tried to match them and blindly failed– in this look, the navy in the striped turtleneck tie into the navy in the jacket, and the black overalls work as a solid base for the whole look.  The pops of rust in my booties and sunnies pair well with accentuating the navy (in my opinion 🙂 ) I met up with blogger pal Mollie for the JustDrew runway show at Gotham Hall– check out his collection here.   Then, it was back to our hotel, The Roxy (formerly the Tribeca Grand), which was AMAZING, to change for Valentine’s Day dinner at Barbuto in this outfit (Look 3):

I just switched out the overalls and turtleneck for this navy pinstriped dress from Forever 21, and braved the cold with bare legs and the same rust booties I wore during the day (thank  you Uber drivers!)

Look 4: Casual in a Rust-ic sweater, jeans, Stans, and long grey coat for Dim Sum Brunch:

Rust sweater: Urban Outfitters |Grey menswear coat: Forever 21| Ripped knee maternity jeans: Topshop (non maternity version here)|Sneaks: Adidas Stan Smiths|Rose Gold Clutch: Gigi New York|Beanie: Nordstrom (old, similar here and here)

We stopped in Chinatown for Dimsum at Golden Unicorn (voted best in NYC people– go there, NOW!!!) to close out our NYFW/ Valentine’s Day weekend.  This was a few minutes before it started snowing, when stark white Stans and ankle bearing cuffed jeans seemed like a good idea! I kept the rust theme going with my fave comfy oversized sweater, and topped it with some boyish grey accessories– this coat from F21, and my fave grey beanie.

Sidenote: Restaurant and Hotel Recommendations!

Over this NYFW weekend, we ate at:

Mokbar, Chelsea Market (great ramen, dumplings, wings)

unnamed498

Bubby’s Tribeca: (Cozy brunch spot serving all the classics)

unnamed499

Barbuto: Chef Jonathan Waxman’s tasting menu was literally the best thing(s) we ever ate.  Pork Paparadelle Ragu, Kale Pecorino salad, and his famous roast chicken were just a few highlights– great date night spot guys!

Golden Unicorn: Voted best Chinese Dim Sum in the city, year after year.  I’ve been going here since I was a kid– now I get to bring my little guy to one of my fave spots in the city ❤

The Roxy Hotel: Formerly the Tribeca Grand, The Roxy is a cool corner building on West Broadway where Soho meets Tribeca– super cool jazzy vibes here- def chic and stylish, but minus the pretentious airs some other NYC hotels can have.

Well that’s it you guys! Hope you enjoyed sharing in my Fashion Week escapades– check back for my summary or all the best looks, trends and what should be on your style radar in the near future.

Being pregnant during the winter months hasn’t been the easiest style-wise…I’ve only found 2 pairs of maternity jeans that I really like and fit well, and there are only so many times you can make an “outfit” out of leggings (repeat– leggings are NOT pants!) Therefore, my go-to look has usually involved a dress and booties or sneakers.

When I found this cable knit sweater dress from Pink Blush Maternity  (available for preggos and non-preggos alike at www.shoppinkblush.com) I knew it would be a wardrobe staple during the colder months.  I’m usually not a huge fan of the sweater dress, because they can read as frumpy– but the lace trim detailing and funnel neck of this one made it love at first sight!  The fit is GREAT, stretchy to accommodate a growing bump (7 months this week!), the length is perfect for work and/or going out, and it’s the perfect shade of soft grey.  I love, love, love the lace detailing at the bottom– it kicks the styling up a notch.  I’ve worn the dress so far with these Rag and Bone booties and the grey menswear inspired coat I have on above, and alternately, with my white Stan Smith kicks and a black moto jacket– each gave the dress a different vibe– this is how you know a piece is super versatile!

Pink Blush has both maternity AND non-maternity options to shop– its great for flowy, feminine dresses, everyday staples, and event or special occasion worthy pieces (especially good source for mamas to be who need an outfit for a wedding or shower!) Shop my exact dress HERE, (size wise I ordered my normal pre-pregnancy size small), and a few other of my fave picks (both maternity and non) below!

All of the below items can be purchased in maternity or non-maternity sizing!:

Some of you guys might not know this, but I am half Chinese! My dad is Chinese, and my mom is a mixture of Irish and German.  My “halfie-ness” is actually part of the meaning behind the name of my blog “TheLittleGoldMix” (get it?!)…and it’s a part of me that I’ve really come to embrace, cherish and celebrate as I’ve gotten older (my younger self struggled at times with what box to check on the SAT forms and college apps… I guess I’m “other” :/  ).  As a kid, we would always celebrate Chinese New Year in some way as a family– eating moon cakes (yuck, I just watched), enjoying noodles together (symbolizing “long life”), and getting red envelopes ($!) from relatives.  Red is a symbolically celebratory, happy, and lucky color in Chinese culture, so I like to try and wear it in some way for the New Year. Red is not a color I normally wear though, as you guys probably have noticed by now…I actually love the way it looks on brunettes, I just don’t own that many red pieces for some reason.  At this point, in the last week of my second trimester, this red buffalo plaid shirt from Madewell is the only red piece in my closet that fit, so I used it as the base point for this casual Dim Sum brunch look– kinda grungy/tough, which I’ve been really digging over the course of this pregnancy.  I find that so many “maternity” items are super girly, feminine, floral etc…which are sweet for many, just not really my vibe.  Also, to go a little psycho-analytic for a min, I think my fear that becoming a mother means my younger days are over– meh– so maybe my affinity for all things rebellious and edgy style wise these days is a reaction to that?! WWFS (What Would Freud Say?) “Edgy Maternity” is really not a popular or easy look to find pieces for, but hey, its me, so I’m willing to put in the effort to stay true to myself!

Anyway, sidenote- 2016, according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar, is the year of the Monkey! For our little guy on the way, this is, to me, the PERFECT sign for him– personality wise, “Monkeys” are supposed to be crafty, witty, funny, and a little bit sneaky (in a cute, not criminal way)– traits that I really love in people in general.  So excited to meet our little Monkey ❤

Shop my look through the links above and have an awesome week guys! Stay tuned for NYFW posts coming next week!

Look: Rachel Zoe Striped Mini

unnamed465

unnamed466

unnamed467

unnamed468

Striped Mini Tunic (worn as mini dress): Rachel Zoe Maternity (on sale!)| Faux Fur Jacket: Zara (sold out, similar one from H&M here!) | Pointed toe booties: Zara (sold out, similar here) |Skinny velvet scarf: Zara (similar one from ASOS here)|Lipstick: MAC Rebel

I wore this look to a friend’s gender reveal party this past weekend– I’ll tell ya, it def felt good to get dressed up after a long winter being pregnant and wear A LOT of “outfits” consisting of leggings/comfy clothes! I picked up this Rachel Zoe maternity tunic (petites like me can wear it as a mini dress!) recently, so I built the look around its kind of “mod” feel.  The dress itself is super high quality, stretchy and fitted in all the right places– it’s probably the most pricey “maternity” piece I’ve bought, at about $90 on sale (originally over $120), because I just cannot bring myself to spend money on expensive pieces that I’ll only wear a few more times! This dress, however, was def worth it, because I’ll pair it with (you guessed it) sneaks and loafers come spring, when I’m OUT TO HERE PREGNANT …anddddd it even works as a non-maternity dress (it fit well when I bought it at around 15 weeks, bumpless).

I decided to pair it with my fave faux fur jacket from Zara for a contrast in textures, black tights and pointed booties– and I added the skinny scarf (usually not a fan of scarves — I love how they look, but I always feel like I’m being choked lol) to keep with the 60s/mod feel.  I’m digging how the skinny black scarf kind of has the same style effect as a choker!

Shop this look by clicking on the links above– this outfit would work for pregs and non-pregs alike!
