Styling Fall Looks with Madewell

Last weekend I had the pleasure of working with one of my favorite brands, Madewell, to style some looks from the fall collection, help shoppers put together outfits, and make my Fall picks (super hard– literally loved everything!) at their store located in the Walt Whitman Mall on Long Island.  They even gave an extra special discount to any of my fellow teachers who came in to shop with me that day!  Drinks, snacks, shopping and styling (and taking 948404 pics along the way of course!) — what could be better on a Saturday afternoon at the end of summer?
The fall collection is full of all those perfect fall shades– rust and mustard being two of my absolute faves.  Madewell is always my go-to for sweaters in the fall and winter; they’re super well-made (haha get it?!) and always have the perfect slouchy-femme look.  Madewell is also a fave spot of mine to score overalls, both short and long, again, because of quality, fit and the modern-vintage wash.  This was the first time I actually tried on and purchased a pair of jeans from Madewell– being a petite 5’2, it can be hard to find jeans that fit– but their 9″ rise black ripped skinnies FIT PERFECTLY and even had a raw hem that I can cuff or even trim myself to show off shoes.  Below, shop my exact look, plus my picks from the fall collection– already purchased the jeans, suede heels, overalls and mustard sweater!

Ways to Wear: Slip Dress/Tee Combos

The good news about this look, is that there really are no rules! The whole idea behind 90s “grunge” looks is about breaking rules, or making your own– and for me, its all about contrast– this is the ultimate girly/tomboy look, which you guys know is my fave!
So here are a few ways that I’ve worn this look recently…if you like my exact pieces, I’ve linked the ones that are available beneath each pic:
1. Metallic Slipdress and dark tee:
goldslip
Gold glitter slipdress: Zara |Grey fitted cropped tee: Forever 21 |
I love the idea of unexpected shine or metallic fabrics for day– just make sure you don’t look like you’re last night’s leftovers by pairing a gold or metallic slipdress like this one with daytime appropriate sneaks and a basic tee to ground the look.
2. Floral slipdress and white graphic tee:

I wore this look for a girls night, and actually based it around the gold heeled booties.  Since the floral slipdress had a low lace top, I chose a graphic white tee to have the text peek through the top, and kept the tee looking basic and boyish because of the girly pattern of the dress.  The gold boots keep it modern and not like I stepped out of a 90s time machine.
3. Blush lace slipdress and dark Ying-Yang tee:

Lace slip dress: Zara | Ying Yang symbol tee: Urban Outfitters
Not usually one for lacey things, I picked up this version of the dress because of its neutral yet feminine color tone and sweet cut– I knew I would love pairing it with sharp booties like I did here or will in the future with sneaks.  I wanted major contrast here, so I wore this dark grey Ying Yang (sooooo 90s…who else had a tee like this in 7th grade!?) underneath to really play down the femme dress.
Shop my exact looks above through the links, or find below, a few other of my current fave slipdress/tee pairings– hope you guys find some inspo here and remember– you really can’t go (too) wrong with this look!

Mix List: My Picks from the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale

Guys, one of the best sales all year is upon us– the Nordstrom  Anniversary Sale, giving us the opportunity to get a head start on our fall wardrobes (there are also plenty of wearable-now, summer-ish items to shop as well!) for a lot less– prices go up when the sale ends, and some of the discounts are pretty awesome.  I’ve rounded up my fave picks, a few of which are already ordered and on their way (ahem, gold boots!!!)…
Classics-wise, now is a great time to get the Topshop genuine leather jacket, a wardrobe MUST– if you’ve always done a cheaper faux version, this sale is a great way to grab a real leather moto at a great price.  The Nixon gold watch, Kate Spade gold cuff and faux leather leggings and mini skirt are also wardrobe staples for me– I constantly wear items like these, so yearly upgrades are necessary! The floral midi dress just screams fall to me– I’ll wear it early with laceup sandals now, and with booties come fall.  The denim jumper dress can be worn now with an off the shoulder top underneath, and in the cooler months with a slim turtleneck and tights.  White sneaks are still going strong year round– I need new ones for summer, and these Stan Smiths will take me right into fall, anchoring all my almost-too-feminine looks with a boyish flair. The 3.1 Phillip Lim bag–!!– Can you believe this awesome designer classic is under $300 on sale!? Need. Bombers are still gonna be important this fall, and an olive one like the one I’ve picked below will go with everything you own.  Every girl needs at least one oversized plaid shirt in her rotation, and in my opinion, Madewell does them best–and now that Nordstrom sells Madewell, really, what are you waiting for? The Topshop lightning bolt sweater is just super fun and makes me smile, and the Adidas tank is perf for layering under a blazer come fall, or under overalls now during the warmer months.  Lastly, I chose for you guys two awesome beauty buys– a MAC brush set which includes all the basics, and a Bobbi Brown bronze eye pallet, flattering on all skin tones. So, get ready, set, shop! Enjoy my picks; use the links below to buy!

(More) Mix Musts: Summer Pairings Under $100

Untitled #39

During the warm spring and hot summer months, it’s easy to get stuck in a same old, same old rut of shorts, tank, flip flops (no shame in your game sporting this around the house or out once in awhile!)– but I try and challenge myself to creating looks out from mixing up interesting pieces.  If you take a look at the items above, I’ve paired them up (tops, bottoms, shoes), but really, I’d pretty much wear ANY of the items together! Use this guide for a “what pieces to pick up for summer” starting point– I promise you, you’ll find yourself mixing and remixing these pieces on lots of sunny days ahead!
